If you enter your data and see that the maximum recommended trailer weight is below the rated trailer weight for your FE, that means you need to increase the tongue weight to stay in the 10% - 15% range and be able to pull a heavier trailer. It is telling you to adjust your tongue weight down for that trailer. The calculator will still give a maximum trailer weight outside of that range but it is 'flagged' if it falls below the trailer weight needed to keep at least 15% on the tongue. So, there's a "minimum" gross trailer weight for a given tongue weight to keep within those guidelines. Wait, did he say a "minimum" trailer weight ?įor a given tongue weight input by the user, the trailer weight range is calculated to make that tongue weight fall in the 10% to 15% of trailer gross weight as recommended by most towing guides. The calculator now 'forward calculates' the range of minimum-to-maximum trailer weights for a given set of payload values entered by the user. The calculator will now not accept a tongue weight value over 350 pounds.Ģ. So, a major revision to the calculator is the result.ġ. Well, that's outside the Ford Trailer Towing Guide limits for our Escapes, so I needed to clarify that. On a different thread a member mentioned using the calculator and left me with the impression that they thought a tongue weight above 350 lbs was 'recommended' or 'OK' for certain situations. If curious, your specific spring part numbers are found in Ford's Etis data system for your VIN on a page of detailed build-data (accessible to we mere mortals with a subscription here ) the last two alpha-characters in the spring part number installed on each vehicle can differ car-to-car to reflect the exact spring-rate installed to 'tune' the GAWR front and rear (and thereby the GVWR and Payload). That's done by installing springs specific to the 'vehicle build'. Ford adjusting the GVAR's to keep payload and trailer capacity approximately equivalent regardless of weight of options. No worries, I know you're a long way from your FE -) I do note that the GVWR and F/R GAWR are slightly higher on your fully loaded Ti than on my less-than-loaded SE. or _ lb." That's the 'payload' for your Escape. ^^^ Thanks, Adam, but FYI there's another tag lower on the door pillar (Tire Loading Information) with the phrase: " The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed _kg. I'm not knocking Ford per se, just trying to enlighten about the real limits of trailer towing with the FE if you stick to the recommendations of their (safety) engineers rather than lock-in on the advertising hype. Increasing the tongue weight to closer to 15% for better handling further reduces the allowed trailer weight accordingly.Īnd of course all this if you are comfortable using a vehicle at the absolute limits of its rated capacities. This keeping the tongue weight at 10%, an absolute minimum to avoid trailer sway IMHO. If you increase the occupant weight to 350 lb for a trim couple and carry no cargo in the FE the maximum allowed trailer weight drops to: For example, if you plug-in the minimum 10%/350lb trailer tongue weight you find that the weight of occupants+cargo is limited to: Interesting to me is how easy it is to see the fallacy of the 3500 pound trailer rating with factory tow package if you adhere to Ford's GCWR limit.
